The fire started around 4:24 p.m. Sunday, July 7, in the garden-style apartments located at 50 Gateway Road, said Yonkers Fire Department Deputy Chief Daniel P. Flynn.
Arriving firefighters encountered a fire in a top floor rear apartment in the complex that quickly spread through a common cockloft area below the roof, Flynn said.
At one point, the fire reached a three-alarm fire with some 65 firefighters on the scene.
All residents and animals in the building were able to self-evacuate the complex with one minor resident injury, the chief said.
The fire was declared under control by 5:56 p.m., he said.
Assisting fire departments included New Rochelle, Mount Vernon, Eastchester, Hartsdale and Greenville.
The cause of the fire is currently unknown and is under investigation by the Yonkers Fire Investigation Unit.
Twelve firefighters reported minor injuries.
The Red Cross is assisting families in need.
